EMMA BLAIN
I was born in Aberdeen on the 18th of August 1984, but I have lived in Shetland most of my life. I have spent the last four years studying at the Glasgow School of Art where I was awarded a £1,000 grant from the Worshipful Company of Weavers, as well as coming 3rd in the Bradford Textile Society Design Competition for excellence in design of a contemporary woven fabric, Women’s wear. I also work part time for the Shetland Museum as a Visitors Services Assistant, as well as being a keen member of the Shetland Arts and Crafts Committee.
CLAIRE HENRY
I was born in Aberdeen on the 20th July 1984, having lived in Shetland my whole life I then moved away in September 2002 to become a student of textiles at the Glasgow School of Art. Whilst there I studied becoming an individual designer, always being pushed to come up with fresh new ideas, working towards tight deadlines with specific briefs. After gaining experience in knit, print, embroidery and weave I specialized in woven textiles as I enjoyed the skills needed in the construction of fabrics, opposed to the manipulation of them. In my final year of study I designed a hand-woven, non-colour Interiors collection pulling inspiration from car grills, road markings and buildings as structure and repitition are key elements in my design. I aspire to create highly textured, graphic and contemporary fabrics with a particular interest in using cottons as well as mixing this with luxurious silks and rayons.
